Well, I hope these are final, as I need to start making progress on a zillion details.
Question that will not affect plans now, but matters someday. (Had a long argument with Evan about this.) Should the gas stove go in the island?
ARGUMENTS
EVAN: Yes, definitely. Part of the point of a camp is sharing the experience and the chit-chat....so having the range facing the LR and the DR allows the cook(s) to be engaged with the brother they haven't seen in a while or the niece and nephew playing checkers in the LR or even to catch a glimpse of the family returning from the lake so they know to start the soup.
MATT: No. If you put a stove in the island, you can't use it as a place to have a snack, or to have breakfast. There you are reading the paper, and you set down the paper, and oh crap, the burner was hot and the paper is on fire. We can put the stove on the other side of the sink, and get it closer to conversations, but let's not put it in the island.
Well, I am never quite sure, what do you think? And no, I am not asking if we should take the now rusting stove that is back out on the porch and cut a hole in the cabinets and drop it inside :)
I'm with Matt ... but maybe for Evan's reasons you might put the sink (or a prep sink?) in the island.
ReplyDeleteYour sketch looks a lot like the Taj's layout, which seemed to work well.
Hi Matt, I agree with you on your concerns. We already have someone in our house (who shall go unnamed but whose name begins D and ends with K) who drives me crazy by laying newspapers, plastic wrap from veggies, etc on top of or close to the stove top so I would argue to leave that space pretty open. We have our sink there in order to face the crowds and the tv set (!--not my choice but surprisingly it works) Someplace to work, talk, mix, chop, slice and carve or set up a buffet for lunch or dinner would be great.
ReplyDeletePutting a sink in the island will work pretty well with the prep and the cleanup worker facing the action and engaged with family & friends ...it also allows a fan over the range at the wall to be exhausted directly to the outside.
ReplyDeleteI have designed many kitchens, and have found that people's first choice is the range in the island, with second choice a sink in the island. One couple who recently went from a face the wall kitchen to a face the action island kitchen, were very happy and excited by the change in engagement.
So if the range doesn't work in the island, then I'd recommend the sink in the island.
